Welcome from the Headteacher

I am delighted to welcome you to the St Joseph's School website at what is an exciting time in the school’s journey as we journey through the Summer Term. If you are a prospective parent, I hope that what you discover about our school here will lead you on to a great visit to the school itself, and a chance to explore our site at its finest: from the main buildings to the Astro, the Orchard, our outdoor classroom, the sports field and even our latest addition, the Canopy Classroom, and to see the children enjoying each and every day of school.

Parents who choose St Joseph's entrust us with the welfare and progress of their children - one of the most important jobs in the world - and it is a responsibility we take very seriously indeed.

To see just how well we succeed in our aims, and that our ethos of Care, Compassion and Community are living values, please read our recent ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) Inspection Report, from December 2022, which demonstrates just what we are all about. I was delighted that the Inspection Report found that “The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is Excellent,” and that “The quality of the pupils’ personal development is Excellent.” https://www.stjosephscornwall.co.uk/about/inspection/

These are the highest gradings possible for any independent school and are testament to the work of everyone involved with the school, and the individual care we can show for each child, whatever their talents may be. That we support all children was shown in the report, which not only highlighted the outstanding academic achievements of our highest attainers, but that that “Throughout the school pupils, including those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) and EAL (English as an Additional Language) (English as an Additional Language), develop excellent levels of knowledge, skills and understanding for their abilities across the curriculum.”

We have an outstanding record of accomplishment, over many years, as one of the highest attaining schools in the Southwest, and we do so with no entrance exam, thus welcoming all pupils.

We are a school where the ISI noted that “Pupils are highly enthusiastic learners, fully focused and keen to fulfil their potential at every stage of their school life” and that “From an early age, pupils are nurtured to make good decisions which affect their learning and relationships and appreciate that the decisions they make will impact their success and well-being.”

St Jo’s is a community of learners, from staff to pupils and on to parents. Pupils have a highly developed sense of moral understanding; they take responsibility for their own behaviour and readily embrace the school motto of, ‘Care, Compassion and Community,’ and it is a school where children “are considerate towards each other, irrespective of gender or the relevant protected characteristics and are generous in their praise of their peers’ successes.”

St Joseph’s is a happy, thriving school that offers every pupil a firm foundation for life, one where happy, successful children are at the heart of all we do. Pupils are encouraged to reach their full potential, whether academically, sport or the arts. Our ethos and aims are living documents, and we take our obligation to meet these very seriously.

We have elevated expectations of every child and this, combined with small teaching groups and excellent pastoral care, ensures our pupils develop a confidence that is key to future success.

We continued to offer excellent care and academic provision throughout the Covid 19 pandemic, improving from lockdown to lockdown, and we were immensely proud of the outstanding online all-round education received by the children during this time. Our children have risen to the unique challenges recent years have brought in extraordinary ways, and I could not be prouder of their many achievements. This is their school.

Visits to the school can be arranged at any time to suit, and I look forward to meeting any future parents who may be interested in applying. A visit will ordinarily involve a tour of the school in the company of two of our pupils, followed by a meeting with myself and any relevant staff given your child, or children’s, unique needs. For prospective parents, please do contact our Registrar Miss Rebecca Walker at the address registrar@stjosephscornwall.co.uk.

If you are a current parent, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss any aspect of your child’s time at St Jo’s. This is best done by contacting reception@stjosephscornwall.co.uk

We are a school where our children believe that everyone deserves to be treated kindly and acknowledge that learning from one’s mistakes is a strength. If this sounds like the school for you, please do get in touch.

I look forward to meeting you in person soon.

With best wishes,

Oliver Scott
